Attracting one of the region’s largest field of Nine Hole golfers, Walton Golf Club welcomed 109 competitors to their 20th consecutive annual tournament on 6 May. There were 23 clubs in attendance with players mainly from Waikato and Bay of Plenty and some participants driving from as far north as Warkworth and as far south as Rotorua.
To commemorate the twenty year milestone a trophy was presented following the tournament, to the Walton entrant with the highest stableford score, in each of the Ladies divisions. The inaugural winners were Susan Garrud in Division One and Jennifer Wiles in Division Two.
Lorraine Mettam, Tournament Organiser acknowledged the support of sponsors and volunteers. ‘This is a highly regarded tournament on the Nine Holers calendar thanks to the warm hospitality of Walton Club members and generosity of the Nine Hole sponsors.’
Walton Nine Hole Ladies Golf was formed in 1999. In the autumn of 2000 they organised their first tournament. Originally it was a two day event of golf, evening entertainment and champagne breakfasts. With registrations declining, the tournament became a one day event in 2011. Then in 2012 a Men’s division was introduced. Today the Walton Nine Hole tournament is a popular competition with interest increasing each year.
